The sea
areas of Bangladesh are of immense value and importance to the country
and its people. The Bay is very rich with marine fisheries resources.
Some of the important fishing grounds are "Swatch of No Ground", "Middle
Ground", "South Patches" and "Kohinoor Point". These fishing grounds attract
many local fishermen and also illegal fishermen from foreign countries.
Besides, gas fields have been discovered in this area and there is good
prospect of striking hydrocarbon in the area. The livelihood of millions of people of Bangladesh
and the economy of the country are greatly dependent on its resources
in sea areas and its numerous rivers. Considering the importance of
safeguarding national interest and maintaining law and order in these
areas, Bangladesh Coast Guard was formed in the month of September 1994.
